About Armand Nicolet

Armand Nicolet is a Swiss watchmaker with a history dating back to 1875. They pride themselves on being one of the few Swiss brands to survive the quartz crisis, and they were making advanced complications in the early 1900s.

Over the years, Armand Nicolet has continuously perfected his technical skills. He spent a lot of time studying the designs and forms that influenced his timepieces. His watches are considered masterpieces of beauty, quality, and precision.

Why Manual Winding for Armand Nicolet Watches?

The most common reason for Altanus watches to be hand wound is so that you can set the time accurately with it, this saves you from having to reset the watch as often, it also means that the watch will always be accurate and reliable.

Winding a watch is a complex endeavor, but for many watch lovers, it is one of the joys of interacting with a watch.

Armand Nicolet Watch Manual Winding Steps

Manual winding movement:

Wind up once a day, preferably in the morning. Turn the crown clockwise until it feels heavy and stops. Don't be too heavy when turning the crown, and don't wind it 100% fully, or you may damage the watch.

Automatic winding movement:

When you start using it, you need to wind the chain by hand, and after a few clicks, the second-hand starts to move. Then you check the time and put it on again. The watch winds automatically because of the movement of your hand. If you don't wear it, the watch will stop naturally. If you wear it for about 12-16 hours a day, the power reserve of the automatic winding device is about 34 hours (depending on your hand activity). If you wear it for less than 12-16 hours a day, the power reserve will not be exhausted until 34 hours ago.

If you like to wind your watch by hand when you are not wearing it, you need to turn the crown about 55 times a day to achieve a power reserve of 34 hours. If your watch is a manual winding watch, you need to turn the crown about 23 times. Each time you turn the crown with your finger, you will only turn the crown about half a turn, so we recommend that you need to double the number of turns to achieve a full turn.

Note: Do not use an electric motor or plastic ring to turn the crown, as turning the crown at high speed may damage the winding mechanism.

Armand Nicolet Watch the Winder Setting

Armand Nicolet watches are wound correctly most of the time. Generally speaking, Archimedes' self-winding movements need to rotate 650-800 revolutions per day, and most of them can be wound clockwise.

If you cannot find your watch model (or movement) in this watch, you can try to determine your Armand Nicolet winding mode. You should choose the combined winding mode (CW+CCW) and minimum turns per day (TPD).  Then put the watch into the watch winder and check the accuracy of the time displayed by the watch after a few days. If you run behind, you need to increase your TPD by one level.

Armand Nicolet Watch Time Adjustment Method

Crown Position

  1. Tightened position (normal use position, only used for screw-down crown).
  2. Unscrew position (only for screw crown), normal use position (non-screw crown) manual winding.
  3. Adjust the time and the second-hand stops.
  • Adjuster A - quick adjustment month
  • Adjuster B - quick adjustment calendar
  • Adjuster C - quickly adjust the moon phase
  • Adjuster D - quick adjustment week

Adjust the Time

Adjust the time by unscrewing the crown counterclockwise (screw down the crown only).

Adjust Date, Day of the Week, Month, Moon Phase, and Time:

Use adjuster B (quick date adjustment), adjuster A (quick month adjustment), and adjuster D (quick adjustment day of the week) to the previous day.

Then use adjuster C to adjust the position of the moon. Each click is a day. To find the correct position of the moon, first, go to the full moon position. With the help of a calendar, calculate how many days have passed since the last full moon, and adjust by subtracting 1 from the same number. To adjust the time, turn the hands clockwise until past midnight until the desired date, and then adjust the time. If it is afternoon, the hour hand must go past 12 noon. This way the date and time are all adjusted.

Note: To prevent damage to the mechanical structure of the calendar, please do not adjust the calendar between 20:00 and 06:00.

Can I Always Wind my Watch Manually With the Crown?

It’s okay to do this once in a while, but not too often—especially if your watch has a screw-down crown.

Firstly, the gears and other parts of an automatic movement will wear out faster when wound with the crown, and the same goes for the screw-down crown system, as it is not designed for heavy use. Self-winding watches should be worn for at least eight hours a day to make the most of their power reserve, so rather than letting your automatic watch's power reserve drain, invest in a simple automatic watch winder.
